Chapter 11

Shayla took a deep breath. Then she spoke the ancient Greek words that would remove any trace of Mer-magic from him. Bracing herself, she waited to see how he’d react.

He blinked, clenching his jaw. He glared at Carmen, his expression hostile. “Where’s my sister?” he demanded. “What have you done with Nantha?”

“She insisted on waiting in the car until I could judge how pissed off you were.”

“Bring her inside.” When Carmen didn’t move, he added, “Please. For all we know, she might have already jumped into the sea so she doesn’t have to face me.”

“Are you okay?” Shayla asked cautiously. “You were a little out of it earlier.”

“I’m fine. I just need to see Nantha.”

“I’ll go get her.” As Carmen turned to do exactly that, another tap on the door told them Maddie had arrived. Once she’d joined them, Shayla and Carmen filled her in on everything that had happened. Then Carmen slipped outside to retrieve the errant Mermaid. Shayla could only hope Zach wasn’t right and that his sister was still where she was supposed to be.

A moment later, Carmen returned with the meek, blonde Mermaid teen. Nantha looked everywhere but at her big stepbrother, so she didn’t see how his expression had softened.

She swallowed hard. “Hi,” she said, her voice trembling.

No one spoke. Shayla figured Zach probably had something he wanted to say.

And she was right. “Nantha?” The tone of Zach’s voice when he spoke his stepsister’s name was also a command for her to look at him.

Slowly, the teenager raised her chin. Visibly trembling, she finally met her brother’s gaze.

“Why?” he asked, a wealth of emotion in the single word. “What you did almost destroyed us. Me, your father and June.”

At that, she hung her head. “I’m sorry.” They all had to strain to hear her. “I just wanted to have fun. I really didn’t mean for anyone to get hurt.”

Inwardly, Shayla winced, though she kept her face expressionless. This was between Zach and his little sister. And later, she knew Nantha and Ion would have it out, as well. She almost felt sorry for the young Mermaid. Almost.

“There are a million different ways to have fun,” Zach pointed out. “None of them involves worrying your family or luring innocent fishermen. Not only that, but you endangered Shayla and Carmen here.”

“Not to mention your brother,” Carmen put in, her hard voice matching her expression.

“I’m sorry.” Her blue eyes huge and glistening with unshed tears, Nantha sniffed. “Really, really sorry.”

“Come here.” Zach held out his arms. Nantha ran to him, and he enveloped her in a bear hug. “Do you have any idea how worried we were?” he asked, smoothing her hair back from her face.

Watching them, Maddie smiled slightly. Shayla felt a catch in her heart, wondering if Nantha would ever understand the depths of a family’s love. Even Carmen appeared to soften slightly, though she still held herself rigid and stiff. She moved over to stand next to Shayla, clearly uninterested in watching the touching and tender reunion between Zach and his sister.
